Crawford started her career performing at club gigs. In the mid-1970s, Crawford made a name herself in New York singing with jazzmen George Benson & Cannonball Adderley. She signed a Columbia Records deal in 1972. In that year, she released her first single “Knock On Wood”/ “If You Speak the Word”. She sang on Fred Wesley’s A Blow for Me, A Toot To You (1977) and Fred Wesley’s “Knock On Wood” (1972). Crawford recorded for Warner Bros. in 1979 with R&B veterans The Crusaders the transatlantic hit “Street Life”.
Later on, Records were established. One Day I’ll fly Away (1980), You Might Need Somebody (1981), and Rainy Night in Georgia (1982) are her hits. Secret Combination (1981), which was her first album, stayed on top of the UK Albums Charts Charts for sixty weeks. Crawford released Naked And True in 1995. This album brought Crawford back to her roots. She shared her soul roots with famous artists like Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell. These musicians are all members of Funkadelic. She has collaborated many times with artists like Quincy Jones, Quincy Jones Al Jarreau, Rick Springfield and many more. Crawford’s Farewell Tour in South Africa in 2018 was cancelled due to her stroke.
