Karen Mulder was born in 1970 in Vlaardingen which is a city inside South Holland, Netherlands. She grew up at The Hague and Voorburg. The father of her, Ben Mulder, worked as a tax inspector as did her mom, Marijke who was secretary. Karen has one younger sister named Saskia who was a model after she studied economics. In 1985 the year that Karen was just 15 she went on an adventure camping trip with her family in South France. One day, she came on the advertisement of Elite Model Management’s “Look of the Year” contest in a local newspaper. Although she had braces, Karen’s friend took a few pictures of her and sent the photos the photos to Elite without her knowing. In Karen’s delight she took home the first prize in the first round of competition in Amsterdam and then went on to participate in the finals where she finished second.
